We've reached 2016 NWSL postseason, and we already know a new champion will be crowned. Before the playoffs kick-off this weekend it is important to remember that no professional women’s league has survived past a third season. So, as the NWSL gets ready to celebrate this year’s best teams, there is an overarching sense of pride closing out year four.
For the last two seasons the regular season and the playoffs have been dominated by two teams. In 2014 and 2015 the Seattle Reign won the Shield for the best record in the regular season, but fell short in the title match each year. The thorn in their side was FC Kansas City, who claimed two consecutive titles, including last year’s in their home stadium. However, neither Kansas City or Seattle make an appearance in this year’s playoffs, setting the stage for a new team to emerge.
The Bracket
The Portland Thorns claimed the regular season Shield after an impressive start to the season. They dipped late in the year, but recovered in the final weekend to take home the prize and bragging rights. As the top seed they will host the 4th-place Western New York Flash.
The Flash have never won the Cup, however, they did claim the Shield back in 2013, the same year Portland won the inaugural title. This will match the top two offenses in the league, which combined for 75 goals in 40 matches.
The second semi-final will be hosted by the Washington Spirit, who lost in the final week of the season and rights to the NWSL Shield. While the last game will have them feeling disappointed, Washington was the hottest team down the stretch. Chicago joined Washington in the playoffs last year, but each failed to advance to the final. The Red Stars will be led by Christen Press and Julie Johnston, who will be looking to give Chicago their first hardware.

TV coverage and sponsorship money is critical to every sports league. Even more so for a league looking to establish a foothold, generate revenue and draw fan interest. Fox Sports 1 has stepped up this year to give this deserving league coverage. In the final few weeks of the season several games were aired, including last weekend’s 3-2 come from behind victory for the Seattle Reign.

Predictions
History tells us that home field advantage matters in the NWSL playoffs. While the Flash are the highest scoring team, Portland will likely be sold out with over 20,000 supporting fans. Likewise, Press has had a great year, but the Spirit will have an edge about them giving away a 2 two lead in the last match.

Allie Long had an impressive September, winning player of the month, and will push the Thorns to their second NWSL title. Portland will join Kansas City as a two-time champion, and remain the only two clubs to hoist the Cup. Portland wins 2-0.
