Heung-min Son makes surprise cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Heung-min Son is one of the world’s most beloved soccer players, and the love for the South Korean has gone as far as surpassing the Premier League and going across the Marvel multiverse.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the second installment of the animated Miles Morales story as Spider-Man, hit the big screen last Friday, June 2, as one of the most anticipated films of the year. It's an extraordinary sequel that's already regarded as one of the best superhero movies of all time.

The third part of the trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to hit theaters March 2024.

Apart from its amazing story-telling and top-tier animation, one scene in the film that was probably overlooked by many was definitely noticed by soccer fans that went to see the movie last weekend.

Sonny gaves us a Premier League easter egg.

That’s right. The Tottenham star is officially tired of making fans from this world fall in love with his skills, goals and charismatic personality and has begun to make fans from other worlds do the same.

In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, a scene sees Miles Morales web-slinging into his dorm room to do a wardrobe change, revealing a poster of the 2022 Premier League Golden Boot winner hanging on the side of the wall. Sonaldo mania has gone through the Multiverse and reached Earth-1610.

The South Korean can be seen wearing the Spurs 2021-22 home kit but sporting the adidas X Speedportal.3 boots in the pink colorway, a pair he used during the 2022-23 season.

The Spider-Man and Heung-min Son connection

The Spurs No. 7’s appearance in the Spider-Man universe may have come as a surprise to many, but if you’ve kept up with the South Korean over the past couple of years then you’d know that the Spider-Man and Sonny connection has been building to this very exact moment.

Coincidentally, the live-action Spider-Man actor for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Tom Holland, is also a declared Tottenham fan and has shown his admiration for Son and the club in the past.

During Holland’s press tour in 2021 for the film SpiderMan: No Way Home, the British actor’s love for Tottenham and Son’s love for Spider-Man called for a collaboration ahead of the release of the film. Well, as expected, their link-up resulted in one of the most unexpected but iconic interviews you’ll ever see – Peter Parker interviewing Sonny.

“My brother and I, we’re huge Tottenham fans and we’ve loved following (Son Heung-min),” Holland said.

The Spurs player’s cameo appearance comes through the world of animation of Miles Morales — a story separate to the one of Tom Holland's Peter Parker — but we believe it was the perfect way to introduce Son to the Spider-Verse. Quite frankly, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Son show up in the live-action Spider-Man universe in the near future.

After all, everyone loves Spider-Man and everyones loves Sonny; it's the perfect collaboration.
