The 2018 Liga MX Femenil Apertura Final commenced Tuesday with the first leg between Club América and Tigres at the Estadio Azteca. Given the poor state of the Azteca pitch and since the men’s Liga MX final pits América versus Cruz Azul (both tenants of the Azteca) on Dec. 13 and Dec. 16, the Femenil final was given the shaft — the game was played on a Tuesday with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
But that didn’t stop over 33,000 fans from attending and roaring América to a 2-0 lead by the 71st minute.
Azteca going on a Tuesday!
Over 33,000 were in attendance for a 4pm weekday kickoff to see @AmericaFemenil! Thank you, fans! pic.twitter.com/zT6rJmhwTP— Club América (@ClubAmerica_EN) December 12, 2018
The first goal is featured above — an absolute golazo from Diana Gonzalez. América then doubled its lead through Betzy Cuevas, but then promptly fell apart. Julieta Peralta scored an own goal on a corner to pull Cruz Azul within one, and then Lizbeth Ovalle made it 2-2 in the 85th minute after a calamitous mistake at the back for América.
D’oh.
The second leg is Dec. 15 at the Estadio Universitario in San Nicolás. Tickets for that match have already sold out, so over 41,000 will be on hand as a champion is crowned.
