Germany Decides Men’s National Team Nickname No Longer Appropriate

BERLIN — Germany on Thursday decided to drop the name die Mannschaft (the team) for its men's national soccer team, saying it may be a recognisable term abroad but was viewed critically at home.

The name was officially introduced a year after Germany won their fourth World Cup crown in Brazil in 2014 and was part of the branding around the national team.

Christian Eriksen Completes Transfer To Man United 13 Months After Cardiac Arrest

Manchester United signed Christian Eriksen on a free transfer with the Danish playmaker signing a three-year deal, the Premier League club announced on Friday.

Eriksen, who needed life-saving treatment on the pitch last year when he suffered a near-fatal cardiac arrest in a European Championship match against Finland in June, returned to action with Brentford after signing a short-term deal in January.

Iran Fires Coach 4 Months Before Playing USMNT At World Cup

Dragan Skočić has been dismissed as Iran head coach with little more than four months to go to the World Cup finals in Qatar, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported on Monday.

It said that Iran's football federation had decided to dismiss the 53-year-old, adding that "there are unconfirmed reports that several Iranian candidates have a good chance to replace Skočić."

The move comes after Skočić, who took over from Marc Wilmots as coach in February 2020, secured the Iranians a spot at the World Cup by topping their qualification group ahead of South Korea.

Kanté, Loftus-Cheek Omitted From Chelsea’s U.S. Tour For Not Being Vaccinated

Chelsea midfielders N'Golo Kanté and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will not feature in the club's preseason tour to the United States due to their COVID-19 vaccination status, the Premier League side said on Saturday.

Entry rules for the U.S. say that all visitors over 18, barring American citizens and other limited exceptions, must be double vaccinated against the virus.

It was unclear whether the two players were unvaccinated or had received only one dose.

A judge said the pair's account of a 'gentlemen's agreement' for FIFA to pay Platini 2 million Swiss francs ($2.05 million) for consulting work was credible, and serious doubts existed about the prosecution's allegation it was a fraudulent payment.

Watford has canceled a friendly match against the Qatar national team, the English club said on Monday after two supporters' groups voiced concerns about the country's human rights record.

The two groups — Women of Watford (WOW) and Proud Hornets — had urged the club to display its support for "all human rights, the LGBT+ community and women's rights" at the game but the fixture will no longer take place.
