Club América is window shopping for a stadium. The club is not leaving its iconic Azteca behind, but the venue's upcoming renovation for the 2026 World Cup is forcing them to find a new temporary home. Las Águilas already have a couple of options around Mexico City, but there are also growing rumors that the team is considering taking some Liga MX games to the United States, where they have a strong fanbase.
Pending plan approval from the Azteca's not-so-happy neighbors, the stadium should be closing its doors after a Bad Bunny concert (Dec. 10). Construction would then start in the first weeks of 2023 and last for at least 18 months, during which América and Cruz Azul (the other team that plays home games there) will have to move elsewhere.
And while Cruz Azul seems to be ready to host its games in the Estadio de la Ciudad de los Deportes, home of Atlante, Club América is still mulling over the idea. Yes, it is a top option, but the team's board is also considering other possibilities: Queretaro's La Corregidora, Toluca's Nemesio Diez and even playing in different venues around Mexico and the United States.
América's plan was revealed by Diario Record, but the publication insisted that nothing has been signed and sealed yet.
In any case, the United States is not unusual territory for Club América. Every year, the club organizes the Tour Águila, in which they play a few friendly games around the country. The 2022 edition, in fact, will be played this month against Tigres on March 26, in Houston, and Monterrey on March 28, in Austin.
The Azteca opened to the public in 1966, and it has been renovated on seven occasions. The new project considers the construction of a new commercial area, a hotel, wider streets, green areas, and the use of renewable energies.
