Superbly Worked Team Goal Highlights USWNT's 3-1 Trouncing Of Canada

The USWNT finished off 2017 with a commanding 3-1 victory over Canada in front of 17,690 at the Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California, with Julie Ertz, Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd scoring the goals for the States. Janine Beckie scored the lone goal for the Canadians.

Overall, the USWNT posted a record of 12 wins, three losses and one draw in 2017. Although they weren’t victorious at either the SheBelieves Cup or the Tournament of Nations, the U.S. finished the year on an eight-match unbeaten streak dating back to July 30.

FIFA Voted Ronaldo, Martens, Giroud’s Scorpion Kick The Best

FIFA actually got something right on Monday when it awarded Cristiano Ronaldo The Best FIFA Men’s Player of 2017 at the FIFA award show. Lieke Martens was named The Best Women’s Player while Olivier Giroud claimed the Puskas Award for the best goal. 

Ronaldo won the honor as best men’s player for the second year in a row and was also named to the FIFA FIFPro World XI alongside four of his Real Madrid teammates.

For many, there can only be one winner in the race for the FIFA women’s player of the year award in 2017, and that’s Australia’s Sam Kerr. The 23-year-old attacker led Perth Glory to the final of Australia’s W-League while finishing second in goals, she finished top scorer at the Tournament of Nations as Australia defeated hosts United States and she’s scored 11 goals for Sky Blue FC in NWSL play.

Sky Blue FC striker Kerr scored a brilliant second-half hat trick to be set the career mark with 35 goals in the NWSL, but all three goals came after a red card to FC Kansas City’s Shea Groom. And it wasn’t the only controversy involving the league's top players on Saturday.

Carli Lloyd’s Champions League ambitions may soon be at an end after Alex Morgan’s Lyon defeated Manchester City 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal. City will now need to travel to the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on April 29 to overturn the large deficit.

City and Lloyd got off to the worst possible start in the opening minutes. An attempted Lyon cross was blocked in the box by Lloyd’s elbow, and the referee immediately pointed to the spot.

In seven World Cups, the USWNT has scored a staggering 112 goals. Those goals have resulted in three winners’ medals, one runners-up finish and three third place finishes. 

Chief among the goal scorers are Abby Wambach (14), Michelle Akers (12), Mia Hamm (8), Kristine Lilly (7), Carli Lloyd (7) and Tiffeny Milbrett (7). While Lloyd’s exploits at the 2015 Women’s World Cup are still fresh in the memory, particularly her stunning hat trick in the final, there are some choice goals from as far back as 1991 that deserve a viewing.
