USWNT defeat Canada on world’s largest slip-n-slide to advance to Concacaf W Gold Cup final

The United States women’s national team defeated Canada 3-1 on penalties (2-2 after extra time on Wednesday) in the Concacaf W Gold Cup amid horrid weather and field conditions at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.

Rain poured down throughout the evening and during the day’s earlier Gold Cup semifinal that saw Brazil defeat Mexico 3-0. By the time the USWNT and Canada took the field it looked more like a swimming pool.

The U.S. women’s national team game against Colombia in the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup quarterfinals on Sunday had it all.

There were questions being raised as to who would start as the USWNT No. 9 after the shocking 2-0 loss to Mexico. Morgan, who was on the bench to start the Mexico game, was given the start vs. Colombia.

She was electric in a renaissance performance for the 34-year-old.

Coupled with a 5-0 win over the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, the U.S. secured a spot in the quarterfinals with one group match left against Mexico in Carson on Monday.

The quarterfinals will be played March 2-3 in Los Angeles before the tournament moves to San Diego for the semifinals on March 6 and the final on March 10.

Soccer fans in Los Angeles did not show out for the United States women’s national team’s 5-0 victory vs. Dominican Republic in the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup on Tuesday.

The USWNT will play all three of their group stage games at Dignity Health Sports Park, the home of the LA Galaxy. The players will be hoping the attendance improves as the tournament progresses.

On Tuesday just 3,242 fans filled the 27,000-seat stadium.
