A Farewell To Arsene

I’m not ashamed to say I’m an Arsenal fan and I’m not ashamed to say Sunday involved a few tears. Arsene Wenger coached the Gunners for the final time after nearly 22 years at the helm, leaving the club after a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

Immediately the clichéd 2008 Harvey Dent quote comes to mind: “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

Indeed, Arsene Wenger was a hero for Arsenal.

What’s The Record For The Longest Drop Kick In Football?

Kicking a ball hard can be a useful skill in soccer. Instead of tiki-takaing your way down a field, you can simply hoof the ball to the other side of the pitch with one strong-legged kick. With that in mind, a goalkeeper being able to kick the ball farther than anyone would be valuable, just like hitting a home run or shooting a 3-pointer. So what’s the Guinness World Record for the longest drop kick? The answer may surprise you.

The Reason We Want Southampton To Avoid Relegation Has Nothing To Do With Football

Southampton defeated Swansea 1-0 on Tuesday in a match that may have been worth more than $100 million in the fight to stave off relegation from the Premier League. Now the Saints just need a point (or a Swansea tie or loss) on Sunday to stay up. But we here at The18 hope Mark Hughes’ men survive the drop not for their footballing prowess but for the banterific Southampton tweet the club sent out Wednesday.

Add Wayne Rooney To The Long List Of Forwards D.C. United Is Targeting

D.C. United is desperate. Ben Olsen’s club is in dreadful need of a striker and the owners want a big-name star to draw the masses to Audi Field when it opens in July. And that is exactly why a newly reported Wayne Rooney D.C. United transfer rumor is so gosh darn juicy.

A Southampton Winner Would Be Worth More Than A Picasso Masterpiece

In today's fixture between Southampton and Swansea City, more than $100 million will be on the line. Largely based on TV revenue, that's a conservative estimate of the cost of relegation to the Championship.
