I can’t imagine what kind of frustrations referees have on a weekly basis: players are always giving them grief, managers always disagree and literally entire crowds end up hating them on a routine basis. If we are all supposed to fear the wrath of a quiet man, then a referee going off the deep end is just about the most terrifying thing I can imagine. And thanks to this La Liga official, I don’t have to imagine that hard anymore.
If that wasn’t intentional then I don’t know what is. The ref wasn’t moving out of the way of the play and accidentally hit RCD Mallorca’s Lucas Aveldaño; it doesn’t look like that at all. No, this referee straight up braced for impact and unleashed a shoulder shove. It was a cheap shot, and it caught the player completely off guard.
I don’t know what Aveldaño did or did not do in order to make the referee do this, but I’d be willing to bet that whatever it is, it happens every game.
That vine is a look into a dark alternate reality. One in which referees rule with and iron fist and a cold shoulder.
Let this be a lesson to us all: don’t piss off referees.
