We wouldn't blame you for thinking that Lionel Messi has broken every record worth breaking at Barcelona. He has smashed a lot of them. Most goals for Barcelona in La Liga, most goals for Barcelona in the Champions League, most goals in a calendar year and so on and so forth.
Lionel Messi became the first player to score 20+ goals in 8 successive La Liga seasons today.

Yet there remains a record that Messi has yet to break, and it might surprise you. What may surprise you more is who currently holds it (unless you've been following Barcelona since the 1990's). Messi has still yet to break the record for free kick goals, and he is chasing none other than Southampton manager and Barca legend Ronald Koeman.

What makes Koeman's achievement even more impressive is the fact that he was a defender and he racked up that tally in just six years. The Dutch great ended up leaving the club in 1995 with a staggering 102 goals under his belt. Did we mention he was a defender? Those are absolutely astounding numbers.
However, as cool as it is that a defender has held that record for over 20 years, somehow we don't think it will last for long. After all, it is Lionel Messi we're talking about here.
