Messi posted a message to his facebook followers in the lead up to FC Barcelona’s second leg against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Messi’s Barcelona lead the match-up by 2-1, but have not won in La Liga in their last three matches, the longest such streak in the era of current manager Luis Enrique. Barcelona look mortal, or as mortal as possible, for the first time a a while, but Messi’s message gives Barcelona fans reason to remain confident.
“Our mindset remains the same. We work hard all year to have a chance of winning trophies at the end of the season. We continue to believe in ourselves.”
Messi is normally a man of very few words, and the chance that his PR team wrote this for him is not ignorable, but this does give us some insight into the fact that Messi realizes Barcelona are in need of a pick-me-up.
Messi himself has not scored in 363 minutes, the longest such streak since 2010/11 when he went scoreless for 400+ minutes.
Look for Messi to try and end that streak tomorrow when Barcelona face off against Atletico Madrid.
Despite whatever slip ups Barcelona has recently committed, they are still the favorites to advance and win the Champions League.
Don’t count them out, Lionel Messi sure hasn’t.
