After finishing fourth at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, the England women’s national team has reconvened under Phil Neville with a squad that includes established stars like Steph Houghton, Lucy Bronze and Toni Duggan, but the Lionesses are clearly building for the future with their sights set on capturing UEFA Women’s Euro 2021 on home soil.
It was almost a decade ago that David Silva was on the verge of making his way to Real Madrid from Valencia. Real president Florentino Perez went straight to the tunnel after a match between his side and Valencia, looking to speak with the player and likely drop a not-so-casual hint the Spanish playmaker should make the move to the capital in the upcoming window. Money is becoming increasingly inflated in soccer over the last five years. It seems like each year a new record transfer fee is set both at a club level and international level. This has been possible thanks to incredible broadcast rights fees in other countries that then trickle down to teams in each league. Teams then have more money to spend on players and clubs take advantage of that, setting ridiculous asking prices for their players as the sponsorship money just rolls in alongside the lucrative TV deals and funding from club owners.
It’s that time of year again: FIFA has announced the 10 finalists for the annual Puskás Award, the trophy given to the player, male or female, “judged to have scored the most aesthetically significant, or ‘most beautiful,’ goal of the calendar year.”
This most certainly wasn’t the case last year when Mohamed Salah scooped the award after Liverpool and Egypt supporters spammed the fan vote. The goal Salah scored against Everton back in December of 2018 hadn’t even won the Premier League’s Goal of the Month, so it was an awful joke to see it given the prestigious Puskás Award.
Frank de Boer, manager of Atlanta United, has become the talk of the town after calling equal pay “ridiculous.”
In an interview with the Guardian he said:
We all know that Manchester City loves to spend big, and it has been under the watch of just about every governing body in football as of late. FIFA and UEFA are the big ones, and they have been after City for a while now after exorbitant amounts of spending and the suspicious transfers of youth players since Pep Guardiola arrived in 2016.
For those who watched the Premier League this weekend, I think there were many conclusions to be made after Week 1, but these were by far the clearest:

Fashion in football has taken on quite interesting forms over the years. More and more, fashion is coming to the forefront with its involvement in the game, the clubs and the players themselves. We now live in an odd world where a player’s style can be equally as important to their image as their stats. Like it or not, this fashion influence seems to be here to stay.
