Luis Díaz's father freed from kidnappers in Colombia after two weeks

BOGOTA — Colombia's National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas on Thursday freed the father of Liverpool soccer player Luis Diaz, after taking him hostage in the country's north nearly two weeks ago, the government said.

Brazil have called up five players for the first time including Palmeiras' teenage prodigy Endrick for this month's World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and leaders Argentina in the squad announced by interim coach Fernando Diniz on Monday.

Endrick, who will join Real Madrid when he turns 18 in July, joins Douglas Luiz, Pepe, Joao Pedro and Paulinho for the first time for Brazil's trip to Colombia on Nov. 16 and the home game against world champions Argentina five days later.

On the back foot for most of the game, Luton took a shock lead when Ross Barkley drove forward in the 80th minute to release Issa Kabore who passed for Tahith Chong to slide the ball past Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Mainz 05 have terminated Anwar El Ghazi's contract following the forward's social media posts in connection with the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Bundesliga club said on Friday.

The Dutchman was suspended in October following an earlier comment about the conflict but had been cleared to return to training on Monday after showing remorse, the club had said.

However, El Ghazi posted a new statement on Wednesday that the German club said was 'incomprehensible' and that they would examine it from a legal perspective.

American Botafogo owner John Textor had an all-time TV rant on Wednesday after his side lost a dramatic game to Palmeiras in Brazil’s Série A 4-3.

Botafogo sit top of the table with 59 points and Palmeiras sit second-place hot on their heels. The top of the table matchup saw Textor’s side take a 3-0 lead after 36 minutes.

Soon-to-be Real Madrid star Endrick got one back for Palmeiras in the 49th minute, but it looked like Botafogo would hold on for a win.

Newcastle’s $74 million signing Tonali receives 10-month ban for illegal sports betting

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been banned from soccer for 10 months over breaches of rules on betting on matches in Italy, the head of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said on Thursday.

Tonali was sanctioned with an 18-month ban, eight of which will be commuted to alternative treatment, after an agreement was reached with the Federal Prosecutor's Office, the FIGC confirmed.

It will rule Tonali out for the remainder of the club season and next summer's Euro 2024 tournament should Italy qualify.

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Feyenoord beat visitors Lazio 3-1 on Wednesday thanks to a double from Mexico's Santiago Gimenez and a strike from Ramiz Zerrouki to move top of Champions League Group E.

The Dutch champions could have taken the lead in the 25th minute when Gimenez's effort was disallowed after a VAR review, but he had another shot five minutes later from Mats Wieffer's pass which flew into the top corner of Ivan Provedel's net.
