The Premier League returned from its first international break with a vengeance: you had Anthony Martial becoming the reincarnation of Thierry Henry against Liverpool; Chelsea going full crisis; and, of course, West Ham providing some hot Monday Night Football action:
That was West Ham’s signing of the summer, Dimitri Payet. Prior to the season, many people were calling him a dark horse candidate for signing of the year in the league in general. When they said that they had goals like this in mind.
It’s a thing of beauty as soon as West Ham wins the ball. Newcastle probably wants to call animal control, because a Mark Noble (#16) sized ball hawk completely shut down any chance they had of clearing the ball. Noble is the rewarded for his efforts and receives a stylish back heel. He holds, holds, and then releases the ball into space for Payet to run on to. Payet winds up as if he’s going to smash it but instead finesses it into the top corner. Class.
Payet would score again, although his second wasn’t nearly as good as his first.
West Ham would win the game 2-0. They currently sit at 5th in the league, a point off the pace for fourth.
