We get it. People want to feel like they are informed and up-to-date with the world around them. That is why journalism exists. The news, and the journalists that contribute to it, keep the general public “in-the-know.” It is a noble cause when you think of it in such a way. It is a public service.
Journalists have a privilege and a responsibility to ask the questions that need to be answered. If they ask the right question to the right person, even a lack of a answer can sometimes be enough to inform the world about what is really happening.
In practice, however, things are not always so fool-proof.
Louis van Gaal is an exceptionally honest person. As in, “tell TARS to keep emotional beings at a safe distance,” permanently set to 100%, honest. The reporter in this video is the latest in a long line of people that have fallen victim to van Gaal’s genuine wrath.
Up until those 6 seconds of doom, however, the reporter had arguably done everything right. He was in a position many sports journalists would kill to be in, asking a question Manchester United supporters around the world are dying to hear answered. He is left with nothing, however, because his question left room for a disarmingly honest response.
Let that be a lesson to all young reporters out there. When you are thinking of hard-hitting questions, be sure that you understand all the responses they might elicit. If a response to one of those questions involves you being made to look like a boy who just asked his mom if he can watch pornography, we highly suggest you rework that question.
You’ll thank us later, when you are interviewing Louis van Gaal II.
