You know, if someone walked up to me today and asked me, “does Kevin Gutierrez give a f***?” I would be hard pressed to come to a definitive answer, because, in the most Mesut Ozil kind of way, it seems like he really couldn’t be bothered to put a free kick in off the cross bar in extra time. He made it look effortless to the point of laziness, is what I am saying, and for those of you who are jumping to the conclusion that I am insulting Gutierrez by comparing him to Ozil, you’ve got the wrong idea.
Mesut Ozil has never given a single f*** throughout his entire life, and has used that mentality to turn him into arguably the most effective playmaker in the world. The man has won the World Cup, for god’s sake, and just turned in an FA Cup winning performance the likes of which few could dream of. And perhaps that is why Gutierrez’ free kick reminds me of Ozil: it won the game. Not just anytime, but a U20 World Cup match against Uruguay.
It takes some serious cojones to do that, in that way, to win the game in the 93rd minute. Look at it again. Look how Gutierrez casually steps back and admires his own work as the ball flies towards the goal.
Ozil would be proud, let’s just hope that Gutierrez doesn’t share the German’s allergic reaction to finishing.
