Memphis Depay to Manchester United has been a consistent story in the British press ever since Louis van Gaal was named United manager back in the summer of 2014. It's an easy enough equation to make: van Gaal gave Depay his debut for The Netherlands; the PSV flier is one of the most exciting prospects in European football; and United desperately need to add pace to their often one-dimensional attacking line.
But while the stories and rumors to date have rarely told us little more than the above, today we learn something a little more concrete: Depay and his agent flew into Manchester on Wednesday for contract discussions.
There's been no official word from either side of the potential transfer, with van Gaal stating "I don't disucss it with the media" and PSV manager Phillip Cocu telling the press, "I have contact with Memphis on a daily basis about many things, but not on a specific club or league."
For the record, United are reported to have offered Depay $195,000 a week to sign for the Red Devils, and are willing to pay PSV $37.5m for his services. Here's why:
