Wayne Rooney was predicted to become one of the best strikers in the world when he made his debut for Everton in 2002 at only 16 years old. He later fulfilled the hype at Manchester United, where he was sold for £25.6.
Eleven years later Rooney is set to make every Everton’s fan dream come true by putting that blue jersey back on for dear friend and mentor Duncan Ferguson, who is set to have his testimonial this summer.
Rooney announced the big news on his Facebook page, letting everyone know how excited he is to support Ferguson.
Ferguson now Everton’s development coach, had quite the career at Everton, scoring 72 goals in 273 games and winning the FA Cup in 1994.
"I'm absolutely delighted that the wee man has agreed to play in the game," Ferguson said. "Everybody knows that we go way back. I knew him as a kid, he's a top man and I'm proud as his friend that he's fulfilled the potential we always knew was there. Wayne's a world-class player and I'm genuinely thrilled that he will play on the day."
The testimonial is set to take place August 2 at Goodison Park against La Liga side Villarreal, where Ferguson and the rest of the side look to get revenge after the controversial defeat that knocked Everton out of the 2005 Champions League.
