The world’s most powerful president had a bizarre meeting in the White House on Tuesday. I’m talking, of course, about FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Infantino was welcomed to the Oval Office by a slightly less prominent president, Donald Trump, in what has to be one of the more bizarre interactions between the sports world, politics and the free press — at least in the last three days (it is 2018, after all).

Not since Clint Dempsey and Brian McBride were in the Premier League have American forwards been playing — and scoring — at the top levels of Europe at a rate they are now. 

Christian Pulisic at Borussia Dortmund and Timothy Weah at PSG are two of the more prominent examples, but Josh Sargent is off to a strong start with Werder Bremen 2 and a pair of USMNT defenders scored in the Bundesliga over the weekend. 

Seattle Reign star Megan Rapinoe pulled out of the USWNT camp due to a rib injury suffered in her team’s win against the Houston Dash last week. Jill Ellis called up Utah Royals forward Amy Rodriguez in her absence for two friendlies against Chile. 

As highlighted by her win at the 2018 ESPY Awards in the category of Best International Women’s Soccer Player, no one in the women’s game comes close to matching to consistent brilliance of Australia and Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr. 

D.C. United’s big name signing has proven that he’s brought a little magic with him from overseas, igniting a hot-streak for the capital club that's seen them go five games unbeaten and making a serious push for the playoffs.

Christian Pulisic has yet to lace up for the new season and Americans in the Bundesliga are already scoring goals in the German top division. Two USMNT defenders found the back of the net on the first full day of Bundesliga action on Saturday. (Bayern Munich opened the season with a 3-1 win over Hoffenheim on Friday.)

John Brooks, the lanky Wolfsburg center back, headed in a corner kick for the first goal in a big 2-1 win over Schalke. 

Josef Martinez is the new Roger Maris. The new Mark McGwire. The new Barry Bonds. Atlanta United’s Josef Martinez now owns the MLS single-season scoring record.

Martinez scored in the 74th minute, his 28th goal this season, breaking a four-way tie for the MLS single-season scoring record. The record was previously held by Tampa Bay Mutiny’s Roy Lassiter (1996), San Jose Earthquakes’ Chris Wondolowski (2012) and New York Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips (2014). 

Oh, and it was the match winner, as Atlanta defeated rival Orlando City SC 2-1.
