Sam Kerr’s 2017 was already the stuff of legend, but that legend just grew following a brace against China on Wednesday. Kerr has now scored in five straight games for Australia, equaling a Matildas record set by Sarah Walsh.
Her second goal of the match was an absolute howitzer. After letting the ball roll across her body and onto her right foot, the 24-year-old unleashed a screamer from nearly 25 yards out. The ball rifled into the top-right corner giving Australia their 3-0 victory.
She’s been instrumental in a massive international year for the Aussies, including four goals during the Matildas triumph at the 2017 Tournament of Nations over the likes of Japan, Brazil and the USWNT.
Kerr also won the 2017 NWSL Golden Boot and MVP award after finishing the season with a record-breaking 17 goals for Sky Blue FC. Despite the overwhelming success, Kerr was laughably left off the shortlist for the 2017 Best FIFA Women’s Player award in favor of Carli Lloyd and college student Deyna Castellanos.
