News of Sir Alex Ferguson’s emergency surgery for a brain hemorrhage was met with sadness and support throughout the footballing community on Saturday as Ferguson’s former club, Manchester United, announced that the legendary manager had undergone a successful procedure and now required a period of recovery in intensive care.
Having spent nearly 27 years in charge of United, the breadth of Ferguson’s impact in football was evident yesterday as messages of support came rolling in from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and rival clubs like Manchester City, Arsenal and Barcelona.
The 76-year-old retired in May of 2013 after leading the Red Devils to 38 pieces of silverware, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League victories (1998-99 and 2007-08).
