Sigh. We knew this day would come, we just didn't think it would come so soon. We saw the signs early. You could see Aston Villa losing steam near the end of last season. It looked to be better when it beat Liverpool in the FA Cup, but we're starting to think that was Villa's last burst of energy.
Things have taken a turn for the worse this season. Villa have earned only 16 points so far this season, well below even the other relegation candidates.
And then...and then it happened. We always said we'd know when it was time to put Aston Villa down. Villa would give us some sort of signal.
After losing 6-0 to Liverpool last weekend and losing 3-0 to its own reserve squad, it's apparent that it's time to take Villa for one last drive to the vet.
Aston Villa has lived a full life, a good life. We've come to the point that we don't think Aston Villa is comfortable anymore. It just seems like Villa is in constant pain. We can't bear to see it suffer.
A once-proud club, never relegated from the Premiership, has been reduced to a zombie-like shell of itself. It can't be happy like this, we keep telling ourselves.
We have to put Aston Villa down. It's the right thing to do.
