MLS caused a stir when it was announced both New York Red Bulls and New York City FC would have floats in the U.S. Women's National Team's ticker tape parade through the Canyon of Heroes in New York City.
MLS is one of the sponsors of the event, which could explain the presence of MLS teams in an event that ostensibly has nothing to do with them. Major League Soccer itself will also have a float.
The New York Cosmos reportedly declined a float because they felt it would take away from the USWNT's victory.
The Red Bulls' float will not include any first-teamers, SB Nation reported.
The National Women's Soccer League and New Jersey-based NWSL club Sky Blue FC will both feature in the parade.
The inclusion of men's clubs has touched off a firestorm, so if I may offer a bit of opinion here:
Who cares? Cheer for the USWNT. If you want the day to be about them, then make it about them. Just a guess: the USWNT players who just won the World Cup will be too deliriously happy to care whether MLS includes itself in their parade, because the parade is being thrown in honor of the awesome thing that they did, not anything MLS did.
So everybody chill out. The Parade is Friday at 11:00 a.m. EST.
