John Goossens is just like the rest of us. He dreams of someday being awarded a professional soccer contract, of being paid to play the game he loves regardless of where that may be. Sure, Goossens is a product of the renowned Ajax Youth Academy, made 30 appearances for the Eredivisie’s Feyenoord and scored for the Netherlands U-21 team, but, deep down, he’s a dreamer just like the rest of us.
A dreamer who can also hit absolute screamers from 35 yards out at the most opportune times. Goossens has been on trial with the Chicago Fire since early February, attempting to earn an MLS contract that will see him brushing shoulders with the likes of Kaka, Andrea Pirlo and Steven Gerrard. With this preseason golazo, I believe his point has been made.
John Goosens Screamer
So, if you find yourself wondering what it takes to earn a professional contract, I’ve now got the answer for you.
First, you’ll need to get a trial with a professional club. I’m not entirely certain as to how one goes about setting up a trial but being a Netherlands youth international is probably a good place to start. If you've never been a member of the Netherlands U-21 team, well, you're probably s*** out of luck because I doubt you'd ever be able to accomplish the next step.
Next, and this is the biggie, you’ll have to absolutely obliterate the ball, I mean just wallop the hell out of it, and have it fly into the top corner with all eyes on you. If that sounds too difficult for you, that's too bad. These guys, for the most part, don't make more in a year than you'll make in your entire lifetime for no reason.
Goossens has yet to be awarded a contract from the Fire with this effort, but who are they kidding? Head coach Veljko Paunovic must’ve felt like Gordon Bombay discovering Fulton Reed’s slap shot or Russ Tyler’s knuckle puck. This man’s a game changer.
