Sergio Ramos is set to sign a new contract with Real Madrid, according to reports featured by ESPN, after negotiations take place on Thursday.
Ramos has been the subject of repeated rumors linking him with a move to Manchester United. In fact, the cavalcade of gossip this month has been so much that anyone not initiated with tittle-tattle of a transfer window might actually believe that a transfer to the Red Devils is closer to happening than not.
We venture to say that these reports of new contractual negotiations taking place between Ramos, his brother and agent Rene Ramos, Madrid president Florentino Perez and director Jose Angel Sanchez firmly swing the pendulum in the opposite direction; Ramos is ostensibly staying at Real Madrid
In its report, ESPN goes on to say that Ramos is expected to get a salary bump in the range of 3 million euros, bringing him to 9 million euros per year. The new contract is also expected to keep him at Real Madrid until 2020.
Should such a pay raise happen, it will be a telling sign of the strong negotiating position that Ramos finds himself in. Manchester United are a very wealthy club who are would benefit greatly from acquiring a defender of Ramos’ caliber, that much is for sure. Should Ramos be unhappy with his salary, he could very well leave Real Madrid and find himself handsomely paid by United.
All things being equal, contractual negotiations are a sign that the Ramos transfer saga is coming to an end; which club he will end up at will be decided very soon.
