This has to be one of the most emasculating injuries we have seen in a long time. It’s not that Barendrecht’s Mitchell van Gastel breaks his nose. Or that he breaks it on a referee’s casually out-swinging arm. It’s that he looks like he is making an inadvertent smack in the face look like a headshot for the ages.
Then however, you see the club physio assumedly wiping blood off of his player’s face, and you realize the sincerity of van Gastel’s misfortune.
We have to imagine that van Gastel got a lot of ribbing from his teammates, and that will he for a very, very long time. The ref didn’t so much as close line the poor man as he threw his arm out for balance, and bumped into van Gastel’s apparently glass face. They even brought out a stretcher!
Leave the man with some dignity, Barendrecht! A bruised ego heals much more slowly than a broken nose.
