It seems that Memphis Depay is the next in a long tradition of talented Dutchmen to cut their teeth in their native Holland, only to leave for bigger and better things once they have proved themselves. The PSV Eindhoven winger has impressed all year, putting together a run of form that started with him breaking out at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and likely ending with him as the top scorer in the Eredivise this year: he has 19 goals, second place has 16, and only 4 match days remain.
Depay’s year has attracted the attention of the world’s best clubs, with Manchester United the rumored front runner to secure signature. PSV hold no illusions about the possibility of keeping their young star.
"The chances are very high that he leaves. If you see what clubs are enquiring about him, they really are the best in Europe."
"When I talk for PSV I would say he is not ready and should continue here for another year. But I am realistic and if I worked at a big European club, I'd buy him without question.”
"With a heavy heart [we would let him go], because a great player and a great guy leaves. But we are also proud that a boy from the academy is going to make such a step."
That was the Sporting Director for PSV, and he is right. Only a fool could believe that a man of Depay’s talents would stay at PSV forever. Deeply is an unfinished product, but his flashes of brilliance show you what kind of offensive dynamo he could be. &
There are shades of Cristiano Ronaldo and Hulk in his play, and if he can reach the level of either of those players he will be a very smart buy, indeed.
The race for Depay begins this summer. Brace yourselves.
