The Los Angeles Galaxy confirmed Monday that striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez will miss three to four weeks due to a calf injury.
News of Hernandez's ailment first broke Saturday, but the team didn't confirm a timetable for his absence until Monday.
The Galaxy conclude group play in the MLS is Back Tournament on Thursday near Orlando, Florida, and the tournament final is scheduled for Aug. 11, meaning Chicharito won't play again in the event.
"He had a knock in training, an injury that will take three weeks to recover, or four weeks depending on the seriousness and his recuperation," Galaxy coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto said on a conference call.
Hernandez reportedly got hurt last Thursday, and he sat out the Galaxy's 6-2 loss to the rival Los Angeles FC on Saturday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. It marked the first time he missed a game since joining MLS.
Chicharito had appeared in the first three games of the season for the Galaxy (0-3-1, 1 point overall; 0-2-0, 0 points in MLS is Back). He recorded his first MLS goal last week in a 2-1 loss to the Portland Timbers during the club's tournament opener. However, he missed a penalty shot in that game and failed to take advantage of two other scoring chances.
Hernandez is the second key Galaxy sidelined. Midfielder Jonathan dos Santos will miss the entire Florida tournament after undergoing hernia surgery.
Chicharito, the all-time leading scorer for Mexico's national team, had stints with Mexico's Chivas Guadalajara, England's Manchester United, Spain's Real Madrid and Germany's Bayer Leverkusen prior to his move to Los Angeles.
