Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez’s preference for the tactically astute Vernon Anita at right-back has made league minutes tough to come by for DeAndre Yedlin. However, a three-match suspension for Anita opened the door for the 23-year-old American.
Yedlin was preferred to the Spaniard Jesus Gamez on Saturday for Newcastle’s league encounter with Aston Villa. The American seized his opportunity with a man of the match display but was unfortunately subbed off due to an apparent ankle injury in the 73rd minute.
Tough game but have to look forward to Wednesday. 1 point better than none... Thanks for the amazing support!! #NUFC

Yedlin was the catalyst for Newcastle’s opening goal in the 28th minute. His dangerous cross from the right could only be turned in by Aston Villa captain Tommy Elphick for an own goal.
(FORCED OWN) GOAL! - A well-placed cross from Yedlin proved too much for VIlla skipper Tommy Elphwick who put it past his own keeper pic.twitter.com/gu4tVmU1rH

The former Seattle Sounders fullback was simply unplayable on the day — terrorizing his opposite number with his frantic pace.
It’s been revealed that Yedlin will have a ’93’ sprint speed in FIFA 17, and that killer speed was on display at Villa Park.
Yedlin also helped to anchor the Newcastle defense. Villa’s equalizer arrived in the 88th minute with Yedlin off the pitch.
Disappointing outcome to a game we should have won. Game changed when Yedlin went off in my opinion. #NUFC

However, Yedlin’s display caught the eye of many.
Thought Yedlin was outstanding - tidy in possession, defended well & a real attacking threat. Looks a superb athlete too. #NUFC

Let’s hope that the ankle injury isn’t serious as Newcastle United return to action on Wednesday against Norwich City.
