Do you want to know what will always, always be able to get people’s attention? Sex. Shocking.
Charlton Athletic has taken this apparent basic law of human nature to heart in a recent publicity stunt. It all started with an innocent little Vine:
Er…yeah, so maybe innocent is a bit misleading. Anyhow, that video right there went viral to the sum of thousands of tweets and re-vines, and over 7 million loops. And it had every reason to. We mean seriously, if someone had actually broken into the home of Charlton Athletic, The Valley, just to get it on in the center circle, well, that’s f***ing insane! So we forgive you, world, you just couldn’t help yourself.
But then Charlton had to go and ruin all the fun:
“#HireTheValley: Score at The Valley in May”
Good lord that is a lame title. We get the whole sex sells tactic — hell, we're using it right now as we feature that Vine and this video in this very article. But, really, the whole thing just sounds like an anti-climactic dad-joke.
As you should have guessed by now, this was all just a big publicity stunt put on Charlton Athletic. And, in terms of publicity, we have to say that they did a bang-on job. No one can argue with 7 million loops. Let’s just hope that all of that attention wasn’t lost when all those who paid it found out it was meant to make them want to “Score at The Valley.” We didn’t know that you could make sex sound that boring. It’s supposed to be titillating, not make everyone wonder whether or not you’re promoting a furniture superstore.
