Chelsea travel to St James’ Park this weekend to face second-from-bottom Newcastle United, and will do so without suspended striker Diego Costa. Heading into this fixture last season, Chelsea were flying high at the top of the table, unbeaten in the league after 14 fixtures. This year the languish in 16th, having lost three of their opening six ties, but come into the game on the back of a very Chelsea-like victory over Arsenal last weekend. They’ll be looking to build on that momentum on Saturday.
Newcastle have started 2015-16 in the same vein that they finished last year: they’ve won just one of their last 17 Premier League games and have recorded the fewest number of goals and shots on target of any team since the start of the new season. However, for all that the Magpies sit 19th in the table, they have an excellent record at home to the West Londoners: they’ve beaten them at St James’ Park in each of their last three Premier League seasons.
