Feyenoord defeated Vitesse 2-1 in Eredivisie action today thanks to Robin van Persie’s thunderbolt of a free kick in the 87th minute. With the job finished, the 35-year-old immediately proceeded to go studs up from behind on some poor fellow to earn a straight red.
87’: Score one of the best free kicks the division will see all year.
91’: Earn a three-match suspension.
It certainly wasn’t the smartest move from the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker, especially since the club has been hugely reliant on its captain for goals this season — Van Persie now has six in seven appearances to go along with one assist.

If the league goes through with a three-game ban for violent conduct, Van Persie would miss matches against Willem II, Zwolle and — most importantly — a trip to Amsterdam to play Ajax.
Van Persie’s wasn’t the only red card of the afternoon. Vitesse had Thomas Bruns sent off in the 63rd minute.

And then Danilho Doekhi was sent off in the 95th to finish the match with nine-men.
