Lionel Messi is set to extend his stay at Barcelona by signing a new five-year deal, with the Argentine talisman set to take a wage cut, La Vanguardia newspaper and ESPN reported on Wednesday.

Messi, Barça's all-time top scorer and appearance maker, technically ended his 21-year association with the club last month and is currently a free agent after his previous contract expired.

Since Joan Laporta took over as Barça president, the club has been trying to reduce their wage bill in order to keep Messi and stay within LaLiga's strict financial control rules.

If You Enjoyed Messi Finally Lifting The Copa, You’ll Love Costa Rica At The Gold Cup

When Brazil was preparing to take on Argentina in the Copa América final, it was widely acknowledged that while many Brazilians were tacitly supporting the Seleção, they’d also partially warmed to the idea of Lionel Messi finally reaping from what he’d painstakingly sown over the last 16 years with the Albiceleste — so much so that Neymar felt compelled to issue a stinging rebuke on Instagram that told those Brazilians to “go to hell.”

Cheap-Shot Punch To The Stomach, Karate Kick Goal And More Nonsense Feature In Concacaf Classic

I’m not going to lie, it’s not easy to go from watching the Euro and Copa América finals to blanky staring at Costa Rica fight off Guadeloupe 3-1 in the Gold Cup. Concacaf’s skill level might not be that of UEFA and CONMEBOL, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t entertainment.

At Long Last, Messi Has His Argentina Moment — Can We Declare Him The GOAT Now?

Lionel Messi is finally a champion with Argentina. In his fifth major final in his 10th major tournament, Messi led La Albiceleste to a major international trophy, beating Brazil 1-0 in the 2021 Copa América final on Saturday night at the Maracanã.

Maybe that will shut the naysayers up after years of hearing “yeah, but” when discussing Messi as the greatest player of all time.

And you could see what it meant to him, his teammates and his country.
