It's a rumour that is becoming more exasperating by the day. Will Jose Mourinho pack his bags and leave his beloved London? Will he relieve his former teacher, Louis Van Gaal, from his duties at Old Trafford, thus repeating every kung fu movie plotline ever? Well, it kind of depends who you ask.
The rumours have basically existed since Mourinho was sacked from Chelsea. He barely had time to validate his parking before he was being sounded out as the successor to Louis Van Gaal. Yet, nothing has really materialized. News outlets have trumpeted various pre-agreements and verbal contracts, but nobody has really come up with anything concrete.
Now, The Sun is reporting that Jose Mourinho has agreed terms to join Manchester United, although again, there is still no written offer or really any conclusive proof of that. If you ask Guillem Balague, United are sticking with Van Gaal. Others say PSG are in for the Portuguese. Who really knows anymore? So, instead of speculating whether or not Mourinho will join Manchester United, we decided it would be more productive to look at three players who could follow him, wherever he goes.
1. Renato Sanches
This kid is the real deal. From the moment he made his debut, he has changed the way Benfica plays. He has been the Portuguese equivalent of Leicester's N'Golo Kante, with his boundless energy and driving runs proving almost impossible to deal with. At just 18 years of age, Sanches has the world in front of him and it just so happens that he has the same agent as Jose Mourinho, Jorge Mendes. He's also the type of player that Mourinho loves, namely a tireless workhorse both offensively and defensively. It would not be a surprise to see Mourinho make him a priority target.
2. Gonzalo Higuain
Higuain has been tearing it up for Napoli. He is the first player in Serie A to reach the 30 goal mark in ten years, and his contribution gave Juventus something to worry about in pursuit of the Scudetto. Mourinho preferred Higuain to Benzema during his time at Real Madrid, and their connection could make a reunion a definite possibility.
3. Zlatan Ibrahimovic
The only rumour bigger than that surrounding Mourinho is the fate of Ibra. We know he is not going to stay at PSG. We do not know whether he will retire or whether he will go somewhere else. Zlatan has not been shy about his affection for Mourinho, and so if there is any man who can persuade him to stay in the game, it is him. In fact, if Mourinho came to PSG, we'd be willing to wager that Zlatan would stay. As it stands, the more likely option seems to be Ibra coming to Manchester. He has never played in the Premier League, and it would be a perfect match if he were to unite with Mourinho at United. Even the Mourinho haters could get behind this one.
