USWNT vs. Japan player ratings: 3 players who excelled, 2 who didn't

An excellent finish from Mallory Swanson was the difference in the USWNT's 1-0 SheBelieves Cup win over Japan on Sunday at GEODIS Park in Nashville. Japan caused all sorts of issues in disrupting the U.S. buildup while launching 15 shots compared to only five for the Americans.  

The U.S. played with fire at the back and the midfield didn't establish any sort of dominance, but the team showed exactly what makes them so difficult to beat even when they're not at their best: an unmatched fighting spirit mixed with individuals who can provide the difference at any moment.

Panama just one win from first Women's World Cup after one hell of a bicycle kick

Panama secured a 2-0 win over Papua New Guinea in the final qualifying playoffs for the Women's World Cup in New Zealand on Sunday and will face Paraguay, who beat Taiwan 4-2 on penalties in a thrilling game.

With both teams seeking World Cup qualification for the first time, Panama and Paraguay will face off in Hamilton on Thursday.

Cameroon will face Portugal, and Haiti will take on Chile in the other two playoffs on Wednesday for the July 20 to Aug. 20 World Cup in New Zealand and Australia, which will be the first edition to feature 32 teams.

Marta only needed four minutes to get game-winning assist after missing last year with ACL tear

Marta is already a soccer legend and built upon that status Thursday when she provided the game-winning assist for Brazil in their 1-0 win vs. Japan in the SheBelieves Cup.

The Brazilian forward will turn 37 when Brazil plays Canada on Sunday but is still producing pieces of magic on the field. 

Thursday’s SheBelieves Cup game was Marta’s first time playing in 327 days. In March 2022 the Orlando Pride star tore her ACL during an NWSL Challenge Cup game vs. the North Carolina Courage.

Sensational Mal Swanson strike in SheBelieves Cup helps earn USWNT 2-0 win vs. Canada

Two goals from Mallory Swanson saw the United States women’s national team defeat Canada 2-0 in the SheBelieves Cup Thursday night in Orlando, Florida.

The USWNT came out swinging with Swanson getting a look at goal less than 30 seconds into the game. It was practically a shooting gallery on Canada’s goal in the opening minutes with Kailen Sheridan making a fantastic save to deny Ashley Sanchez in the third minute.

Rose Lavelle will miss USWNT’s first SheBelieves Cup game due to injury in training

Lavelle will have to watch the USA’s first game of the tournament from the sideline. Head coach Vlatko Andonovski said on Wednesday that the star midfielder picked up a knock in training and will sit the first game out.

Spain women's coach Jorge Vilda on Wednesday defended his depleted squad as the best he wants and bristled at questions about a revolt that has seen 15 players frozen out of the national setup for nearly five months.

Czech Republic international Jakub Jankto comes out as gay

Czech Republic international Jakub Jankto announced on Monday that he is gay, saying he wants to live his life “in freedom.”

Jankto, who plays for Sparta Prague on loan from LaLiga side Getafe, made his international debut in 2017.

The 27-year-old, who has 45 caps, is the highest profile current male footballer to publicly come out as gay.
